Chinese state media say a team of Chinese paramilitary police has arrived on foot at a newly formed lake in central Sichuan province that was created by a seven-point-nine magnitude earthquake two weeks ago.
The Xinhua news agency reports on Monday that the team has begun preparing to blast a hole in a natural dam, created by landslides, that formed the lake.
Chinese authorities say thunderstorms and aftershocks have increased the risk that the barrier, in a remote area of Beichuan county, could burst and cause a flood.
Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from areas below the expanding "quake lake" because of the flood risk.
A strong aftershock struck the area Sunday, killing at least one person, injuring about 260 and damaging some 70-thousand homes.
