Secondary Board Results in West Bengal Raise Questions

West Bengal`s largest school examination results have raised several questions.

The percentage of students who are successful has declined. Secondary Board officials say that there were 75,000 more candidates this year compared to 2007. This indicates that a larger number of first generation learners have a tendency to fail. The school education minister, however, is not worried and has described the 2 % decline as normal.

On the other hand, this is the last year that examinees will be ranked on the basis of numerical grades. From 2009, they will be given letter grades only. The idea is to end the unhealthy competition among students.
