China Blames Uighur Muslims for Attack in Xinjiang, Killing 16 Police

Chinese state media say two ethnic Muslim Uighurs carried out an attack (Monday) in northwestern Xinjiang, killing 16 police officers. Xinjiang is home to a large Uighur Muslim population and the attack comes just days before the opening of the Beijing Olympics.

China's official Xinhua news agency says the two men drove a dump truck into a group of policeman while they were jogging.

They also threw two home-made explosives at a nearby police station and hacked at officers with knives. Xinhua says the two men were later arrested and called them suspected terrorists. No civilians were hurt in the attack.

The report linked the attack to an alleged plot by the East Turkistan Islamic Movement, a group dedicated to gaining independence for Xinjiang.
