Amnesty International’s T. Kumar speaks to VOA About China’s Human Rights Issue, Beijing Olympics

T. Kumar is the Advocacy Director for Asia & Pacific at the Amnesty International-USA in Washington D.C.

In an interview with Voice of America’s Bangla service, Mr. Kumar talked about media censorship, Beijing Olympics and the oppression of Uighur Muslims. He said "China promised the international community, when bidding for the Olympics, that they'll improve human rights, and they will also provide freedom for the international media. In both issues they have failed".

As for the Uighur Muslims he noted that - "even before the Olympics was announced, situation was extremely bad for them. Uighurs face one of the worst human rights abuse in China. Ever since 9/11 China is using War on Terror as a justification to imprison, torture and execute the Uighur political prisoners. They prevent anyone under age of 18 to go to the mosque". Mr. Kumar said, "the only people who can make a difference are - our President Bush and other leaders who are going there".
