Afghan officials say a provincial attorney and at least two others have been
killed in a suicide blast in southeastern Afghanistan.
The governor of
Nimroz province Ghulam Dastagir Azad says that suicide bomber managed to
enter a government building in the provincial capital, Zaranj, and detonate his
explosives.
The provincial attorney, his son and at least one other
person were killed in the attack.
Violence has surged in Afghanistan this
year, as Taliban militants have stepped up their insurgency with suicide and
roadside bombings.
Friday, a top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said more
troops are needed to tackle what he fears will be the worst winter of insurgent
violence since 2002.
Major General Jeffrey Schloesser says militant
groups plan to keep a significant number of fighters in eastern Afghanistan
during the upcoming winter season. In previous winters, snow has limited the
movement of insurgents.
