The detained former Prime Minister of
Bangladesh Khaleda Zia on Tuesday obtained bail from the High Court in the Niko
and GATCO corruption cases which removed the last barriers to her release from
jail.
The
High Court vacation bench of Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Mamnoon Rahman
granted Khaleda Zia, also the Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, interim
bail for three months in the last two of the four cases so far filed against
her.
Additional attorney general Mansur
Habib, who opposed the bail, however, told reporters the government would file
an appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court seeking stay on the
bail in the Niko and GATCO cases.
The
government filed an appeal with the Appellate Division for halting bail Khaleda
earlier obtained from the High Court in two other corruption cases involving
the Barapukuria coal mine and the Zia Orphanage Trust, said the state attorney,
adding the petitions might come up for hearing on September 15.
