Bangladesh Political Situation: An Analysis

After her release from jail Thursday, Former Prime Minister Zia said her party (BNP) will join talks with the military-backed government and participate in national elections set for December. The party had previously said it would boycott the poll.

Bangladesh's military-backed government imposed emergency rules and canceled elections last year, after violence erupted over opposition accusations that the outgoing ruling party tried to rig the ballot.

Since then, authorities have arrested about 170 politicians on corruption charges. Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was also among those charged. She has also been released on bail, pending her corruption trial and has sought medical treatment in the U.S.

In an interview with Voice of America, Dr Ataur Rahman, President of Bangladesh Political Science Association and Professor of Dhaka University commented on the present political situation in Bangladesh.

Amir Khasru has more on the story.
