Sheikh Hasina Gets Court Bail in One of the Graft Cases


Awami League president Sheikh Hasina, now in USA for treatment after being released by an executive order, and his detained cousin Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim were on Tuesday granted bail in the Tk 2.99 crore extortion case.

Hasina, also former prime minister, may be freed through judicial process if she gets bail in only three more cases, said her counsel Shafique Ahmed.

Petitions will be filed soon seeking bail for Hasina in the three cases, he said.

Hasina, who faces 15 cases, is now shown arrested in those three cases, Shafique explained, adding that she had not been shown arrested in other cases.

Hasina, however, has obtained bail in some of the cases, he added.

The High Court vacation bench of Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Mamnoon Rahman also stayed till October 19 the proceedings of the case, now under trial before a special judge's court on the Jatiya Sangsad complex. Businessman Azam J Chowdhury filed the case with the Gulshan police on June 13, 2007.
