Suicide Bomber Kills Nine in Northwest Pakistan

Pakistani military officials say a suicide car bomber has struck a security checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan, killing nine security personnel.

The attack occurred (Monday) in the town of Madian, in volatile Swat Valley.

Pakistan's army has been battling al-Qaida and Taliban fighters in Swat for months.

Elsewhere in the northwest today, unidentified gunmen kidnapped Afghanistan's ambassador-designate (to Pakistan) in the city of Peshawar.

An Afghan official (Noor Mohammad Takal) told VOA the gunmen ambushed Consul General Abdul Khaliq Farahi today (Monday) as he traveled to his home in the city.

Farahi's driver was killed in the assault.

In an effort to combat insurgent activity along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, Afghan Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak (today/Monday) said his nation has suggested the creation of a joint Afghan-Pakistani force.

He said this coalition would be able to operate against militants on both sides of the border.
