The 2nd International Day of Non-violence and 139th birth day of
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was celebrated in India including west Bengal.
On Thursday Indian President
Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi
and commemorated his 139th birth anniversary at Gandhi's memorial at Rajghat.
Hundreds of people and representatives of different religions queued up in
front of Gandhi's memorial to offer their homage and take part in a prayer
meeting in his honor.
The UN General Assembly in June
2007 passed resolution to commemorate October 2, the birth day of Mahatma
Gandhi, as the International Day of Non-violence recognizing his lasting
impacts on the world.
