In an exclusive interview with VOA Bangla Service a
veteran economist from Washington Professor Nurul Islam says the the US economy
has been a focal point of debates and discusions in the election campaigns of
both republican candidate John McCain and Democrat candidate Barak Obama.
He thinks that perhaps in Tuesdays debate there
will be lesser focus on economy. Dr Islam thinks that the economic crisis in
the USA has put democratic candidate Barack Obama in an
advantageous situation than his republican rival John McCain.
Nurul Islam was successively Professor of Economics, Dhaka University,Director
of the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics
(later Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies), Deputy Chairman of the
first Planning Commission of Bangladesh. He also was the Assistan Director
General of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, and Advisor and later Emeritus
Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington.
