Bangladeshi Group Gets Top Humanitarian Prize

The Bangladeshi non-profit group BRAC has been awarded a major humanitarian prize.

BRAC, which stands for the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee, received the one-point-five-million-dollar Conrad Hilton Humanitarian Prize for work that has helped more than 110-million people.

Over the years, BRAC has addressed poverty by providing loans, education, health services and jobs to people in the developing world. Princess Salimah Aga Khan, one of the panel members who awarded the prize, says she and other jurors were especially moved by BRAC's emphasis on women.

The group's founder, Fazle Hasan Abed, says the prize money will be used for anti-poverty programs in southern Sudan. The award was announced on Friday in Geneva on the International Day to Eradicate Poverty.

BRAC was created in Bangladesh in 1972 and now has offices in nine Asian and African countries, including Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan and the United States.
