Indian Media Say Convicted Czech Entomologist Flees India

Indian media say a Czech entomologist sentenced to prison in India for illegal insect collecting has jumped bail and fled back to his home country.

A court in eastern India's West Bengal state gave Emil Kucera a three-year prison term in September for smuggling rare insects out of Singalila national park in June. The court in Darjeeling then released the 52-year-old Czech on bail pending an appeal and seized a passport from him.

Indian media reported on Wednesday that Kucera had left India, possibly via Nepal, and had returned to the Czech Republic. It was not immediately clear how he fled India.Indian authorities arrested Kucera and a Czech colleague in June.

Both men were charged with illegal insect collecting in a protected area, but the colleague, Petr Svacah, was released with a fine.
