'Water Forum' Opens in Bangladesh

More than 100 experts have gathered in the Bangladeshi town of Cox's Bazaar to address the problem of water in Asia, where half the population still has no access to adequate sanitation.

The second international WASH forum, an acronym for water, sanitation and hygiene is being co-organized by the U.N. Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

Officials from local and central governments -- as well as donors, civil society groups, academics and the private sector -- will discuss topics such as integrated water resource management and community participation.

The head of ESCAP's Poverty Reduction Section, Yip Kioe Sheng expressed hope that the forum will raise awareness about the situation.Officials say almost one in five people in Asia lack improved water resources, although many technically feasible and low-cost solutions already exist.
