Kolkata Put on Bomb Alert

Security has been beefed up in the city after Tripura Police alerted its counterparts in Kolkata about a possible terror attack.

It is reliably learnt that city police received an Intelligence report from Tripura in which it was mentioned that terrorists might target the city between 15 and 30 November. According to a senior city police officer, the Intelligence report mentioned that an explosion may take place anywhere in Esplanade, New Market, Park Circus, Chowringhee or Gariahat.

After receiving the report, top city police officers asked officers-in-charge of all 48 police stations in the city to intensify vigil. A fresh guideline was also issued to officers-in-charge last night. Policemen have been asked to keep a close watch on footpath dwellers who, according to the Intelligence report, might be used to carry out blasts in the city.

Tripura Police have also told city police that some suspected activists of Jamat-ul-Mujahideen have already entered the city to carryout explosions in the next fortnight. After collecting Intelligence tip-off from various sources, sleuths belonging to Intelligence branch of Tripura Police also informed the city police officers that a sleeper cell of the militant outfit is active in Kolkata.
