Feuding Leaders Shake Hands in Bangladesh

Bangladesh's feuding ex-prime ministers have met in public for the first time in many years, as their parties wrangle over elections planned for next month.

Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina appeared together today, Friday in the capital, Dhaka, at a military ceremony marking the Armed Forces Day national holiday. Witnesses say they exchanged greetings, smiled and shook hands. The two women have barely spoken to each other for some 18 years. Their rare public meeting came as their two parties are locked in a standoff over the general election scheduled for next month.

Ms. Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party has threatened to boycott unless the poll is pushed back 10 days and the state of emergency lifted. Ms. Hasina's Awami League wants the election to happen on schedule.
