50 Years of Bangla Service: In Remembrance of Jahanara Imam

Jahanara Imam, a renowned writer, teacher, social worker was also a freedom fighter of Bangladesh.

In 1971 during the Bangladesh Independence war, Imam’s young son Rumi, a freedom fighter was caught by the Pak army and brutally killed. Two days before Bangladesh became independent, Imam’s husband died of heart attack. Sadly, Jahanara Imam had no time to mourn. She had to take care of her other young son, her blind father in law and her aged mother.

While taking care of many injured freedom fighters, Jahanara Imam wrote a book on Bangladesh Independence War. The book is one of the best authentic historic accounts of the war.

Masuma Khatun interviewed Jahanara Imam in 1990 when she visited Washington.

Jahanara Imam died of cancer in 1994 in Michigan, USA.
