Israeli Shells Hit UN Gaza Compound

Israel's military pushed deeper into Gaza City on a day of intense fighting, in which it killed a top Hamas official and struck hospitals, a media center and a U.N. compound.

U.N. officials reject Israel's account that its forces shelled the compound because of militant fire from the complex. The U.N. says Israel also shelled three hospitals in Gaza.

Palestinians militants fired at least 15 rockets into southern Israel. And a top Hamas leader, Said Siam, was killed in an Israeli airstrike.

Both Israel and Hamas have defied a U.N. call to stop fighting. An Israeli official, Defense Ministry official Amos Gilad was in Cairo today for talks on an Egyptian-brokered truce plan, then returned to Israel to consult with Israeli leaders.

Palestinian medics say nearly 11-hundred Gazans, including 300 children, have been killed in Israel's campaign, aimed at stopping Hamas attacks.

Thirteen Israelis have also been killed.
