Awami League Wins Bangladesh Local Council Polls

Election officials in Bangladesh say the ruling Awami League party has won a strong majority of the seats in local council elections held Thursday.

Results released today, Friday show the Awami League won nearly two-thirds of the seats in the district councils (known as upazilas). The main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP),took less than 20 percent of the seats, with third place going to its ally, the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami, and the rest of the seats going to independent candidates or smaller parties.

Voting was postponed in some districts because of election-related violence. These were the first local council polls in Bangladesh in 19 years. The Awami League trounced its opposition in last month's parliamentary election, winning an even wider margin of victory.
