Opposition BNP Staged a Walk Out on the First Day of the Parliament Session in Bangladesh

The inaugural session of the 9th Parliament of Bangladesh on Sunday witnessed the main opposition BNP staging a walkout prior to the speech of President Prof Dr Iajuddin Ahmed bringing accusation against him of breaking his oath.

"The president breached his oath by not holding election within 90 days as stipulated in the Constitution. Following that the country was under the rule of an unconstitutional government for two years. So, we cannot hear the speech of the president," said BNP leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, MP, after staging a brief walk out from the House under the leadership of the opposition leader and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

At one stage when the Speaker announced in the House that President Prof Dr Iajuddin Ahmed would now address the Jatiya Sangsad, BNP leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, MP, demanded floor from the Speaker to say something but the Speaker did not allow him the floor.

Before the address of the President of the republic, he said, without using a mike, that the BNP-led four-party alliance would boycott the Parliament during the address of President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed for his failure to hold the parliamentary election within 90 stipulated days upholding the Constitution and democracy for which he took oath as the President of the republic.

Later, the BNP-led four-party alliance led by Khaleda Zia staged a walkout from the House.

Earlier, in the inaugural session, the parliament unanimously elected Advocate Abdul Hamid as the speaker and Col (retd) Shawkat Ali as deputy speaker of the House. The first session of the Jatiya Sangsad started soon after the arrival of the outgoing speaker Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar at around 3.15 in the afternoon.

In the beginning, the outgoing speaker made welcome speech and then conducted the election for the posts of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker. Barrister Sircar said that only one nomination was dropped for the post of Speaker of the House, which was tabled by Chief Whip Vice-Principal Abdus Shahid MP and was seconded by Whip Segupta Yasmin Emily MP, naming veteran parliamentarian Advocate Abdul Hamid
