Kyber Pass Bridge Bombed, Severing Afghan Supply Link

Pakistani officials say suspected militants have blown up a bridge in northwest Pakistan, cutting a key supply route for NATO forces in neighboring Afghanistan.

The 30 meter iron bridge in Pakistan's Khyber Pass was destroyed and all traffic was halted. Officials say they are repairing the bridge and hope to reopen it by Wednesday mid-day.

The only other land route to supply western troops in Afghanistan runs through southwest Pakistan.

Separately, Pakistan's military says it has killed at least 35 insurgents in the northwestern Swat valley. Officials saythe army targeted militants in an overnight operation in the Khawaza Khela part of the valley.

Militants in Swat are battling to impose a strict interpretation of Islamic law in the tourist destination.
