The Election Commission in Bangladesh has declared valid the
nomination of elderly Awami League leader Zillur Rahman as the lone candidate
for the presidency after scrutiny Monday, apparently making him President-elect.
Polling for the presidential
elections was slated for February 16 under the schedule, but there will be no
need of voting by the MPs as there is no contestant against Zillur Rahman.
Chief Whip of Parliament
vice-principal Abdus Shaheed, after attending the scrutiny of nomination
papers, told reporters that the Election Commission validated the nomination
filing of the veteran AL leader.
Chief Election Commissioner and also
returning officer Dr ATM Shamsul Huda and Election Commissioners M Sohul
Hussain and Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain were present at the EC
secretariat during the scrutiny.
Abdus Shaheed said the nomination form for the presidential polls was submitted
Sunday to the Commission which completed the scrutiny Monday.
