A Rajshahi court on Saturday granted two days’ police
remand for interrogation of two local Jamaat-e-Islami men arrested on Friday in
a case filed in connection with war crimes committed during the 1971 Liberation
War.
Magistrate
Mohammed Alamgir passed the order after hearing an application filed by the
investigation officer sub-inspector SK Khoda Newaz of Mohanpur police station,
seeking five days for interrogating the two accused.
The IO produced Daud Hossain, 70, and
Nur-a-Anwar, 65, of village Dayangpara Barabari under Mohanpur in Rajshahi in
the court at about 11:00am amid tight security.
A huge crowd waited on the court premises to see the
two alleged war criminals.
The police
arrested Daud and Nur from Mohanpur on Friday in connection with a case lodged
on June 22, 2008 by Mejharul Sheikh, son of slain freedom fighter Bashir Uddin.
Mejharul has
accused 19 Jamaat leaders of killing his father and 14 others, and also of war
crimes including assisting the Pakistani occupation army and actively taking
part in rape, murder, arson during the liberation war.
