The Awami League
government has decided to seek appeals from across the country for the
withdrawal of the cases filed mainly against politicians and activists with
‘political motive’ during the tenures of previous governments.
The move has been
taken to unburden the courts of politically-motivated cases and also to help
establish the rule of law, according to the law minister, Shafique Ahmed, also
the head of the 10-member review committee on the withdrawal of the cases.
‘The committee has been formed mainly to deal with cases with political motive against politicians and activists under the previous governments… We have not divided the cases into categories,’ Shafique told reporters at the secretariat after the first meeting of the high-powered review committee.
