While disclosing major plans for women's
development, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday made the announcement that
the number of reserved seats for women in parliament (JS) would be raised to
100, more than double, from the present 45 keeping the provision for their
election by direct voting.
She declared that the government would repeal
all the existing laws which are discriminatory to the womenfolk.
The Prime Minister was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the event marking
the International Women's Day at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.
Citing her move to provide important berths
to women in the cabinet, the Prime Minister said that already the charges of
key ministries like Home, Foreign and Agriculture and the post of the Deputy
Leader of the House, were given to women and that she had plan to install a
woman Speaker in parliament in the future.
