Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam is a Professor of English in Dhaka University. In this exclusive interview with VOA Bangla Service, Professor Islam looks into the cause of present violence in the higher educational institutions in Bangladesh and suggests remedies to come out of this unwanted tension and turmoil in educational institutions.
He blames mainly the student wing of the Awami League which is now in power. He says that the in-fight is about gaining upper hands in illegal extortions in and around the campus. It is kind of getting their share while they are in power. Professor Islam also says that the so-called reformists in the ruling Awami League could also be responsible for these violence. Although he did not rule out Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's assumption that students fromother parties could have infiltrated in to their student wing, Dr Islam says that the onus essentially lies on the shoulder of Chhatra League, the pro-government student party.
Professor Islam welcomed Sheikh Hasina's decision to relieve herself from the organizational leadership of the confronting student wings and said that the trouble makers themselves should be responsible for their deeds. He said that students' politics for the sake of ideology and ethics devoted to the students' demands themselves should not be banned but the politics of conflict and confrontation on matters related to extortions and threats should be objectively dealt with by the law enforcing forces.
