Dr. Ghulam Murshid , an eminent scholar of Bangla Language and Literature and an author of several research based books and publications, now lives in London.
On the occasion of Poet Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary, Dr Murshid discusses at length Tagore's songs.
In an interview with VOA Bangla Service, he divides Tagore's songs and emphasizes that in spite of changes in Bangla music, Tagore's songs still remain popular because of its unparalleled lyrics and melody .
Dr Murshid refutes the common belief that Tagore's songs lack in variety of tune and melody. He says people who say so mistake style for melody. Tagore has a unique style but there are subtle differences between his different music and it is this variety which lies underneath the popularity of Tagore Songs across generations.
Dr Murshid says that the words of Tagore songs are very much structured within stanzas and almost like sonnets they invoke our emotions in different perspectives.
