Thousands of Bangladeshis joined funeral prayers at Dhaka's
largest mosque Sunday for the husband of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who died
at the age of 70 a day earlier.
He was buried
with state honour at 3:00p.m. Three Namaz-e-janazas were held. The first Janaza
was held at Baitul Mokarram in Dhaka, the second Janaza was held at Pirgonj
High School ground at 1.50 PM and the third was held at Fatehpur Primary School
Ground in Pirgonj.
President Zillur Rahman led tributes to Dr
M.A. Wajed Mia, a nuclear scientist who once chaired the Bangladesh
Atomic Energy Commission.
After the prayers, Mia's coffin was flown to his ancestral village of Rangpur
in northern Bangladesh, where he was laid to rest with full state honors.
Hasina's bitter rival, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, visited the prime
minister's residence and offered her condolences. Ms. Zia's spokesman said the
two women hugged and briefly prayed together.
Mia was suffering from heart-related problems and kidney disease. He sought
treatment at a hospital in Singapore in March.
Mia married Ms. Hasina in 1968 and the couple have two adult children.
