Pakistani
army helicopters dropped troops behind Taliban positions in the Swat Valley
Tuesday, as hundreds of thousands of people continue to flee the fighting.
Military officials say the troops landed in the remote Piochar area in northern
Swat, the suspected stronghold of Taliban commander Maulana Fazlullah.
Pakistan's army says 751 militants have been killed since the offensive began
last week.
Military officials say about 800,000 people have fled the fighting. According
to their figures, that brings the number of displaced in the northwest to more
than one million.
The United Nations refugee agency airlifted 120 tons of supplies into Pakistan
Tuesday as part of expanded efforts to help the displaced.
A spokeswoman for the World Food Program (Emilia Casella) says the
agency has enough food for about 1.5 million people for up to three months.
