President Obama’s Speech is Unique in Tone & Texture: Mehnaz Momen

Dr Mehnaz Momen is the Associate Professor of Sociology at A & M University, Texas .While giving an analytical interview to VOA Bangla Service Dr Mehnaz Momen emphasizeson the fact that President Barack Obama’s speech to the Muslim World on June 4 indicates a remarkablechange from the old policy towards the Middle East . She says that President Obama has vowed to have a single policy towards the resolution of the Middle East Conflict both in public and in private.

On other aspects of the speech, Obama has made it clear that the interdependent nature of the 21st Century World and the Clash of Civilization cannot coexist. Present day world is integrated in pain and pleasure, in achievements and failures to such an extent that any conflict within itself is detrimental to survival of the civilization.

Dr Mehnaz Momen adds that Obama’s speech has two parts. In the first part of his speech he talks about history, religion and civilization and in the second part he mentions about principles and policies in his vision. He differentiates between the perceptions which the Muslims and the West have for each other and the reality. He recognizes the contribution of each other in the making of this world and says in clear words that the right of the existence of Israelis and the Palestinians need to recognize through a Two-State solution.

Dr Mehnaz Momen says that a lot will depend how Obama transforms his visions into actions but she is very optimistic that with the insight that Obama has about the problems he would probably be able to arrive at solutions.
