Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dipu Moni attended a three-day summit of world leaders from 24 to 26 June 2009 at UN’s New York Headquarters to assess the worst global economic downturn since the Great Depression.
The summit’s aim is to identify emergency and long-term responses to mitigate the impact of the crisis, especially on vulnerable populations, and initiate a needed dialogue on the transformation of the international financial architecture, taking into account the needs and concerns of all Member States.
Dr. Dipu Moni also met UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Obaid and discussed ways of further strengthening UNFPA programs in Bangladesh.
Dr. Dipu Moni and Mr. Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines chaired a round table conference titled “Contributions of the United Nations development system in response to the crisis.”
In an interview with Voice of America, Dr. Dipu Moni spoke about the summit and about Bangladesh’s role in the summit.
