Bangladesh Pays Tributes to its Founding Father

National Mourning Day was observed on Saturday marking the 34th anniversary of the death of Bangladesh’s founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The day was observed with a call for immediate execution of the verdict of the Mujib murder case. The day was a national holiday.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib was assassinated in his house at Dhanmondi in a military putsch on August 15, 1975. All but two of his family members were killed in the incident. Hasina and Rehana survived as they were in Germany at the time.

The president, Zillur Rahman, and the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, paid homage to Sheikh Mujib by laying flowers at Mujib’s portrait at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at 6:40am.

After placing the wreaths, they stood in solemn silence for some time when the bugle sounded the Last Post. A contingent drawn from the three services presented an armed salute.

Prayers were then said seeking eter

nal peace of the departed souls and well-being of the country.
