Indian Government to Establish Twin Memorials to Remember Laborers Who Were Shipped From India to West Indies

Nearly 1.5 lakh poor Indian workers were shipped from the Calcutta port to the West Indies about 170 years ago.

They were sent there to work for sugar plantations and most of them settled there.

The Indian government plans to establish twin memorials — one in Calcutta, their port of embarkation, and another on Nelson Island, Trinidad, their port of disembarkation — to enshrine the historic, but mostly forgotten, odyssey of laborers.

Gautam Gupta has the details.
