Rescuers are searching the waters off the southern Philippine coast, where a passenger ferry sank, killing at least nine people.
Maritime officials are looking for dozens of people who went missing Sunday after the captain of the Super Ferry 9 ordered everyone to abandon ship. Authorities have rescued more than 900 of the 964 passengers and crew who jumped into the waters off Zamboanga del Norte province. Navy ships, fishing vessels and air force helicopters are searching for the missing. U.S. military personnel involved in anti-terrorism exercises in the southern Philippines are helping the effort.
The ferry was traveling to the city of Iloilo in the central Philippines. Authorities have not determined what caused the ship to tilt to its side.
The Philippines has one of the worst maritime safety records in Asia. Many Filipinos rely on ferries to travel between islands but accidents are common, especially during the monsoon season.Last year, around 800 people died when a ferry capsized in rough seas.
