Call in –Show: Terrorism in South Asia


South Asia has about 1/5 of world population with multi ethnic multi religious cultures. Being south Asian and Sri Lankan, we have experienced terrorism more then any other part of the world. Apart from Maldives, and Bhutan, All other countries in South Asia is confronted with major terrorism problems.

Conflict driven countries that suffer from terrorism are susceptible to instability, insecurity and poverty. The region of South Asia has a long history of conflict, war and terrorism due to political instability, rampant corruption, and civil conflict. Besides the major conflicts in the region between India and Pakistan, other countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka are sponsors and victims of terrorism.

Nationalism, ethnicity, and religion are among the most powerful forces in the world that are obvious, controversial and contributing factors of terrorism.

This week’s call- in show has assessed the causes and effects of terrorism and extremism in the South Asian countries. The guests in the panel were Dr Iftikharuzzaman , Executive Director, Transparency International Dhaka, Mr Sandhi Mukherjee , former DIG of Police in West Bengal . He joined us from Kolkata .
