Taliban Leader Says Western Troops Face Defeat in Afghanistan

Taliban leader Mullah Omar is warning U.S. and NATO forces that they will not succeed in Afghanistan.

In a statement (Saturday) marking the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, Mullah Omar said Westerners need only to study the history of other foreign invasions in Afghanistan to see that they will be defeated.

He said they should learn from stories like that of Alexander the Great, whose soldiers succumbed to Pashtun tribesmen in the fourth century.

Omar's message comes just weeks before the eighth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion that toppled the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.

The leader of the Taliban insurgency is believed to be in Pakistan but has not been seen in years.

On Saturday, a bomb on a bicycle exploded in the southern city of Kandahar, killing at least five people, including Afghan soldiers and civilians.

Taliban violence in Afghanistan has surged recently. This year has been the deadliest for U.S. and NATO troops in the country since the conflict began.
