A roundtable previewing President Barack Obama’s upcoming
speech on Afghanistan’s policy was held with
Dr. Ali Riaz, Professor & Chairman, Politics and Government,
Illinois State University and
Syed Mohammedullah, a veteran journalist in New York.
They both said, sending 30 to 35 thousand US troops to Afghanistan will
have a very negative effect - in their words, "public opinion shows
52 percent oppose this plan and 45 percent support the effort, and
at present US is trying to overcome the economic crisis, but at this juncture,
when millions of Americans are unemployed - sending more troops to fight the
Talibans and spending trillions of dollars, will have adverse effect in the
country.
They also raised questions on who would provide this huge amount of money and how the US is going to come out of this crisis. They said that efforts must be taken to resolve the problem in an agreed way.
