The BNP national council on Tuesday elected Tarique Rahman senior vice-chairman in a move apparently designed to smooth his path to the party helm.

It also empowered re-elected Chairperson Khaleda Zia to pick the other office-bearers and members for the national executive and standing committees, ignoring the party charter that stipulates election to the posts.

Election of Tarique, Khaleda's elder son, came soon after the council approved a proposal for introducing a senior vice-chairman's post in the executive committee.

The proposal, now part of the BNP constitution, says the senior vice-chairman will lead the party in the absence of the chairperson. He will also be a member of the standing committee.

Earlier Leader of the opposition and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)chairperson Khaleda Zia called for a greater unity to resist any conspiracy against the country in its journey towards democracy and prosperity.

Addressing her party's fifth national council in the city the former prime minister also offered her party's full cooperation to make parliament effective provided that the government took steps to ensure the due honor to the opposition members.
BNP chairperson also pledged her party's constructive cooperation to the government if the government implemented its election promises. Khaleda Zia will select a Secretary General and other presidium members soon.
