Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina underscored the need for political empowerment of the country's women for ensuring their contribution to economic activities and for elevating their social dignity.
She said that the Awami League for the first time has taken steps for direct election of women in local government system aiming at ensuring their political empowerment.
The Prime Minister made the comment when she was addressing a function organized by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka on the occasion of Begum Rokeya Award Distribution Ceremony.
