Village leaders in eastern Bangladesh have ordered a 16-year-old girl to receive 101 lashes for becoming pregnant, even though she claims to have been raped.
The girl's family and human rights activists say a 20-year-old man raped the girl last April, but she felt too ashamed to come forward and did not report it.
The Daily Star reports village leaders in Brahmanbaria district (Khargor village) ordered a hearing on the matter after her pregnancy was revealed.
The newspaper reports the girl received the lashes in her family's yard and lost consciousness for two hours.
Village officials say they did not take action against the accused rapist because he is from a different village.
A human rights advocate says she will help the girl file complaints against the village leaders.
A police official says authorities will take appropriate action if the teenager files any charges.
