Bangla as an Official Language of the UN

The government of Bangladesh has been pursuing the United Nations to make Bangla its seventh official language. In a press conference, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said he is hopeful that Bangla will soon become an official language of the United Nations as are English, French, Spanish, Chinese, and other such languages.

Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, is also working towards this goal. During the inauguration on Monday of Amar Ekushey Book Fair at the Bangla Academy, she said she speaks Bangla in all the UN assemblies that she attends. The Awami League government began the work of building the International Mother Language Institute during its 1996-2001 tenure. Sheikh Hasina blamed the BNP led government for halting the work, which she said her government has resumed.
