On Tuesday, violence broke out in Rajshahi University when a gun battle took place between Islami Chhatra Shibir and Bangladesh Chhatra League cadres. This clash left many people injured and a dead student’s body was recovered from a manhole in the University campus. At around 8 am, Faruk Hossain, a Chhatra League activist and a master’s student in mathematics was found dead in the manhole. Stab wounds were found on the body.
People all over Bangladesh have reacted to the rise of violent student politics through demonstrations and by speaking out. 28 members of Chhatra Shibir have been arrested. Students of Rajshahi University have left the campus and returned home. Awami-League politicians are saying that this kind of politics is not right and Shibir members and their trend of cutting veins cannot be tolerated.
This clash started on Monday when Shibir activists beat up two Chhatra League members, Kawsar Alam and Asadur Rahman. In retaliation, BCL activisits handed Israfil Hossain, a Shibir activist, to the police after beating him up. This internal conflict eventually turned into a gunfight which left 20 students injured in the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
