On Monday, the cabinet of Bangladesh approved the draft Border Guards Bangladesh Act 2010 which sets death as the maximum penalty for mutiny. As per the cabinet approval the force will be renamed as Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB). A six-member high-powered committee was formed at the meeting for in-depth scrutiny of the proposed law before its final approval.
Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh chaired the cabinet meeting. She directed the authorities concerned to enact a deterrent that stops killings like the mass killing that took place in Pilkhana in which over 70 people were killed including 57 army officers deputed to the border force on the 25th and 26th of February in 2009. She hopes that this is the last violent incident of this kind that the country will see.
