Dr. Shirin Sharmeen Choudhury Focuses on Meeting Gender Bias Challenges


Today, our interviewee is Dr. Shirin Sharmeen Choudhury, the Minister of State for Women and Children’s Affairs.

In this interview with VOA, she speaks on gender bias and other issues related to the empowerment of women in Bangladesh. She also discusses children’s rights, a matter highly ignored in many developing countries around the world.She elaborates on government's efforts in meeting these challenges. She says that the gender discrimination in Bangladesh is related to poverty and added that in the meantime, under the National Action for Accelerated Poverty Reduction Strategy ( NAAPRS2) and in the Sixth Five Year Plan special focus is given on the eradication of poverty for women. She says that the empowerment of women in Bangladesh is now taken in a comprehensive way including economic , social and political empowerment .

Dr. Shirin Sharmeen Choudhury recently attended the 5th Meeting of Commonwealth Plan of Action Monitoring Group (CGPMG) in New York, USA. Bangladesh is chairing CGOMG and she accepted the responsibility of “Gender Chair” on behalf of the government.
