Dr. Bharati Roy advocates for Women’s Rights


In an exclusive interview with VOA, Dr. Bharati Roy, the first woman Vice Chancellor and Professor of Kolkata University, also a two-term member of the Indian parliament speaks about the conditions of Women in the Indian state of West Bengal in the context of the centenary of International Women's Day.

International Women’s Day was recently celebrated all over the world on the 8th of March. Dr. Bharati Roy says that it is important to increase awareness about women’s rights in order to make sure that women get the respect that they deserve. She speaks about the bill passed in the Indian parliament reserving 1/3rd of the seats of the parliament for women and gives the reason behind such a historic step.

She also speaks about her book “Shekal, Ekal” which describes the lives of five generations of women that women around the world can identify with.
