In an exclusive interview with VOA, Dr. Karunamoy Goswami speaks about his new book “Rabindra Natto Shangeet” based on his research on the songs that were included in the plays written by Rabindranath Tagore, a poet, novelist, musician, and playwright, who reshaped Bengali literature and music.
There is much that prose cannot convey that songs can. Dr. Goswami speaks about the importance of songs in the works of Tagore. He believes that Tagore knew that only songs along with prose could express his thoughts as fully as he hoped to. His songs gave his plays more depth. Dr. Goswami has carried out extensive research to understand and explain this trend in Tagore’s work. He also touches the controversial topic of the importance of Wagner on Tagore’s work. He believes that Tagore would have been just as successful even without Wagner’s influence.
Dr. Karunamoy Goswami is a noted researcher and music exponent of Bangladesh. Currently he is the Principal of Cambrian College in Gulshan, Dhaka.
