Congressman David E Price Visits Bangladesh

Congressman David E Price (D) of North Carolina led a three member delegation to Bangladesh.

In an interview with Voice of America’s Bangla Service, Congressman Price said they met with the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, opposition leader Khaleda Zia, Speaker of the Parliament and other Parliamentarians.

Congressman Price said that their mission was distinct in that they were members of House Democracy Partnership which is a bipartisan Commission of the House that pays particular attention to Parliaments.

Congressman Price said “Democracy is not about elections but it is what happens between elections and having a responsive, effective Parliament is key to that.”

The Congressman said despite a long standing rivalry between the two parties in Bangladesh, the two leaders insisted on election which took place in 2008. Congressman Price expressed hope that the two parties will work out issues in the Parliament as they should.

He said “Bangladesh is a very important country, it is a large country, it is a country at a strategic location in the world and it is a country that despite contentious politics still has a history of moderation and of democratic rules.”
