Professor Anisuzzaman goes back to the Origin of the Bangla Calendar on the Eve of Bangla New Year


Dr. Anisuzzaman, Professor Emeritus from the Department of Bengali in Dhaka University and an expert on the history of Bengali Language and Culture speaks about the origin of the Bangla Calender.

On the eve of Bangla New Year, Professor Anisuzzaman traces the origin of Bangla Calender to the days of Moghul Emperor Akbar. He says that this calender seemed convenient for the peasants as well as for the tax collectors.

Professor Anisuzzaman also talks about the evolution of the celebration of Bangla New Year from merely a business oriented program to a large national celebration. He speaks about the social, cultural and political impacts of the celebration of Bangla New Year and adds how it is related to Bengali Nationalism which eventually brought forth Bangladesh as an independent country.
