Tripartite talks to decide on the future of an interim administrative set-up of Darjeeling hills have failed. Again, there is political uncertainty surrounding the Darjeeling Hills.

Governments of both the Bengal and Indian governments have refused to add any area from the plains to the hills territory. The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), which wants more territory, protested by walking out of the talks.

The GJM has called for a 48-hour bandh in the Darjeeling Hills from the 15th of May. They are demanding that parts of the Terai and the Dooars be included in the jurisdiction of the proposed administrative set-up.
