" Bangladesh is under Parliamentary Martial Law", alleges Opposition Leader - 2002-11-05

The Leader of Opposition and Awami League Chief Sheikh Hasina has said that Bangladesh is virtually under , what she calls a " parliamentary martial law." Speaking to the members of the Overseas Correspondents Association in Bangladesh , the former Prime Minister alleges that the government is " clinically dead." She has called for early elections, saying the country is no longer a democracy because of the effects of an ongoing anti-crime campaign.

Sheikh Hasina said on Tuesday the anti-crime campaign launched last month targets opposition activists rather than common criminals. She said , she could only support the anti-criminal army campaign if it was carried out without disregard to the country's constitution and human rights. She said that anti-crime campaign should not be considered as a "license for killing people."

In the meantime, top criminal Emran Hossain alias Kala Faruq, who was arrested at Zia International Airport on Monday minutes before he was to fly off to Sweden, died in police custody yesterday under mysterious circumstances.
